Carthage Tiger Wrestlers split up last weekend to travel to Excelsior Springs and Seneca for varsity and junior varsity tournaments. Heading in to the last month of competition, Coach Kenny Brown commended his team on the hard work and effort they’ve shown. “At Excelsior, we came away with three kids that placed first, one that placed second and three that placed third. There was a lot of diversity among the classes of schools that were represented, but just because we’re Class 4 and we may be wrestling a Class 1 or 2 kid doesn’t mean we can take those matches for granted. We’ve wrestled live a ton the past couple of weeks and done a lot of conditioning. That can only help us going into districts and state when the matches are more competitive and last longer.”
Brown sites junior, Kale Schrader, and his finals match Saturday as a perfect example. “Kale wrestled a kid that he beat pretty soundly before. This time, he was a little under the weather and the match went into overtime. We pulled out the win only because Kale was able to fight through and was in better shape.” Kale’s win helped him set a Carthage Individual Weight Class Record this weekend. He now has the most team points by a 220 in a season. He currently has 213.5 pts, beating the previous record of 210 set by Mike Fleischman in the 2003-04 season. Coach Kenny Brown and the Carthage Tigers will be back at home for a dual versus McDonald County and Marshfield on Thursday, January 24th at 5pm. This is also Senior Night.

Small numbers are not a problem that the Carthage High School Junior Varsity Wrestling Team possesses. With 32 kids competing at the Seneca JV Tournament, Carthage brought home hardware from nine, 1st place finishes and nine, 2nd place finishes. “I think it’s a little intimidating to other teams when they see us walk in to the gyms with these kind of numbers. Right now, the biggest problem we have is getting all of our kids matches. It’s exciting to see their love of the sport – especially when many of them are starting out wrestling for the first time. I look forward to watching them get better and better as the season goes on.”
With a new wrestling room and an abundance of practice partners, Brown and his coaching staff will look at results from tournaments like Seneca as they prepare their team for the coming seasons.
