CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Carthage R-9 School Foundation wrapped up an exciting month of April with Monday’s Senior Academic Awards Night. Carthage High School seniors were honored in a ceremony highlighting their state and regional awards, academic letters (top 5% of senior class), Seal of Biliteracy achievements, Technical Center honors, Summa, Magna and Cum laude status and scholarship acquisition. The ceremony, attended by students, family, faculty and presenters was the culmination of the spring awards season and the Foundation’s final presentation for the 2021-2022 academic year.
Earlier this month, the Foundation concluded the annual Boylan Art and Writing Contest with a large showing of work in the categories of two-dimensional painting, two-dimensional drawing, three-dimensional art/sculpture, photography, essay-open subject, fiction and poetry. Art pieces have been on display at the high school and will remain until school concludes on May 27th.
Students were also able to participate in this year’s Flanigan Speech Contest, conducted by Carthage High School speech and debate instructor, Bryan White. The event, which featured members of the Flanigan family as this year’s judges, took place on April 13th and highlighted the skills of students in the extemporaneous speaking, oratory/declamation and sight-reading categories.
Probably April’s biggest surprise, however, was when members of the Flanigan family, local residents Matt and Tracy, extended their generosity to the school district with a one-million-dollar endowment! The first of its kind, the endowment was invested by the Carthage R-9 School Foundation for the benefit of the elementary Bright Futures program in Carthage, Missouri. The Flanigans, along with Bright Futures coordinator, Greg Spink, and Carthage Superintendent Mark Baker were presented with a check at the April Board of Education meeting by Foundation Director, Crystal Brown. The announcement came as a surprise to the Board of Education, who responded with an outpouring of gratitude for the Flanigan family and their continued support of the Bright Futures program.
