Maple Leaf is very nearly passed. I say very nearly because you have one more opportunity to get your Maple Leaf on this season at the Fair Acres Family YMCA Charity Costume Ball, Saturday, October 27 from 5-11PM. Join the Y at Memorial Hall for a wonderful evening of dinner, live music, dancing, libations, games, and live and silent auctions. Costumes encouraged and proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Y Scholarship Program.

Talk about a fantastic festival of winners, there were a ton!

First up, Thursday, Oct. 18th held the ever popular, and always sold out, Three Minutes of Fame Lip Sync Competition hosted by Grundy’s Body and Frame Shop with stage décor by Florette by Countryside and prize money provided by PIC Plastics.

In the Adult Division first place went to Community of Christ & Friends for their medley of the Greatest Showman.  “Bad Reputation” brought Always a Bridesmaid second place. Rounding out the top three was Southwest Agency Sync or Swim with “All About the Change.” In the Junior Division Aubrey Jewett, Ryleigh Horton, and Addie Foust took first place with “Jailhouse Rock/A Little Less Conversation/Burning Love.” In second place was Jaxyn Herman with “A Tribute to Three of the Best.” Third place went to JC Showmen for “The Other Side.” Isaac Spain took first place in the Youth Division with “A Million Dreams.”

Thank you to Emcee Cheryle Finley, judges Richard Webster Jr., John Hacker, Sandy Higgins, and Jeannette Clem, and all the participants and spectators!

Friday morning, the Carthage Senior Center hosted their annual pie contest and bake sale. There were many delicious pies entered but the judges chose Amanda Stone’s pecan cheesecake double decker pie.

Amanda’s pie was decorated with pie crust maple leaves which no doubt added that extra something special to bring her a win at her first ever pie contest!

Friday evening, The Fair Acres Family YMCA hosted the Maple Leaf 5K. Overall female winner was Marjorie Carter with a time of 22:02. Overall male winner was Seth Cannon with a time of 19:52.

This year’s floats went above and beyond, and several were recognized for special awards. Leggett & Platt took the Sweepstakes Award which is granted to the “most outstanding” unit of the parade. The Chamber’s Choice Award was given to Southwest Missouri Bank. Butterball won the Artistic Achievement Award. The Community Image Awards adult award went to Arvest Bank. The youth award went to Carthage Church of Christ. New Day Dog Training took this year’s Special Recognition Award. Maria’s took Saturday’s equine award for their parade entry.

Sunday’s dog show Best in Show went to Toby, a mini Australian Shepherd who was dressed as a police officer. With six heats in the dachshund races, the competition was fierce. Mini Dappled Doxie Izzy walked away top winner.

Congratulations to all this year’s winners and mark your calendars for next year’s festival with parade day on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019.
