Carthage wrestlers continued their win streak this week with a third-place finish at the Farmington tournament over the weekend and a victory over Joplin High School Tuesday night.  The long drive to Farmington resulted in a third-place finish for the team, who competed against mostly eastern Missouri schools such as Farmington, De Smet, Jackson, Pacific and Mary Institute Country Day School.

Junior, Tanner Putt and senior, Bradyn Tate, both brought home individual championships, respectively, at 106 and 138 lbs.  Putt won by fall in 8 seconds over Michael Lobo of De Smet in his first round.  Second round was won by decision over Jackson’s Kamden Gerhardt, followed by a bye in the third round.  Putt got another fall in the fourth round over Mason Link of Pacific, and ended the evening with a decision over Aiden Hahn of Farmington to win the championship. Bradyn Tate started off strong with a technical fall over Pacific’s Brock Webb, and then continued to steamroll through the second and third rounds with subsequent pins of Jackson’s Caleb Schlick and De Smet’s Wesley King.  A medical forfeit in the fourth over teammate Grady Huntley led Tate to the championship, where he decisioned Farmington’s Zeke Moreland.

Carthage continued its success throughout the day with second place finishes by Caden Groom at 113 lbs., and Dylan Huntley at 144 lbs.  Wyatt Hole (126 lbs.), Aydan Nye (132 lbs.), Israel Perez (150 lbs.) and David Recinos (215 lbs.) all brought home 3rd place finishes.

Tuesday night’s matchup at Joplin High School saw repeated success for Carthage varsity boys in a high intensity win over the Eagles, 44-27.  Tanner Putt led the Tigers at 106 lbs. with a pin over Lucas Allen.  Freshman, Caden Groom played off Putt’s momentum by securing his own pin over Gabriel Kabutha at 113 lbs.  The next two matches propelled the Tigers’ momentum with successive pins by Uziel Teo at 120 lbs. over Joplin’s Jacob Porter, and Wyatt Hole (126 lbs.) over Dylan Houston.  Mason Pugh (132 lbs.) and Keagan McCoy (157 lbs.) both took a loss by fall, while Dylan Huntley (144 lbs.), Joshua Hill (175 lbs.) and Alexander Salas-Marquez (190 lbs.) lost by close decisions.  Israel Perez emerged with a decision over Ben Hedrick at 150 lbs., while Lenny Escobar (165 lbs.) earned a technical fall over James Clemons and David Recinos pinned Johnny Williams in the 215 lb. match.  A forfeit by Carthage at 285 lbs. gave Joplin the six-point victory, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Tigers from securing the team win on the evening.

The JV team saw victories in 8 of 17 matches on the evening, with key bonus point wins by Wyatt Reed (106 lbs.), Jace Nichols (113 lbs.), Rolman Paxtor-Elias (113 lbs.), Franky Contreras (138 lbs.), and Nelson Cun-Lopez. Malachi Douglas, Grady Huntley and Jed Fewin also secures wins by decision.

The Tiger Boys Wrestling team next travels to Harrisonville for a two-day holiday tournament beginning at 4pm Friday, December 15th.  Catch the Tiger Wrestling team at home for the Carthage Holiday Dual Tournament on Thursday, December 28th at the CHS main gym beginning at 10am.
