WILLARD, Mo. — The Carthage High School wrestling team competed in the Central Ozark Conference Tournament at Willard High School on January 26th and 27th.
Bringing home a 7th place finish, Carthage boys medaled six wrestlers, with senior Bradyn Tate, 138 lbs., winning the championship. Tate capped the first-place victory by avenging a previous loss earlier this season to Nixa’s Aidan Ward. Ward was responsible for one of Tate’s two losses on the season when he beat Tate at the Carthage Dual Christmas Tournament.
Junior Tanner Putt brought home a second-place finish Saturday in the 106 lb. weight class, with a hard-fought loss in the championship match to Brandon’s Ryzen Isringhausen, 7-5 in sudden victory. Putt’s four previous matches on the road to the finals were all won with bonus points as he tallied three falls and a technical fall. Fellow junior, David Recinos (215 lbs.) also placed 2nd on the day with three falls and a decision heading into the finals match. Willard’s Porter Talbot, however, overpowered Recinos in the championships with a quick pin in the first period. Recinos may have a chance to avenge the loss at the Class Four District Three tournament in a couple of weeks.
Wyatt Hole (120 lbs.), Grady Huntley (132 lbs.) and Jaxton Lopez (285 lbs.) all made their way on the podium with 4th place finishes. Hole bested Neosho and Webb City the first two rounds, but unfortunately couldn’t overcome Carl Junction, Ozark and Republic, who all recorded pins. Huntley picked up a bye and two wins before losing by technical fall to Ozark’s Caden Harrington in the fourth round and dropping a major decision to Fisher Butler from Neosho in the 3rd place match. Jaxton Lopez recorded two falls before losing fall, himself, to Willard, Joplin and Nixa.
On the girls’ side, Friday night’s competition at Willard saw freshman Irish Lee bring home a 3rd place medal and Maylee Brown 4th. While Lee lost a heartbreaker in the first round to Nixa’s Addison Harkins, she fought her way back with pins in the next four rounds to earn 3rd place. Brown struggled with losses to Ozark, Webb City and Nixa (all pins) but bounced back with wins over Republic and Neosho to bring home 4th place.
Carthage boys compete at Districts at Ray-Pec High School February 16th and 17th, while the girls travel to Belton on February 9th and 10th.
