This year’s Class Four District Three District Tournament took place in Nixa, Missouri on Friday and Saturday, February 11 and 12. After a fifth-place finish at the Central Ozark Conference Tournament in Neosho a couple of weeks ago, the Tigers were ready for a good showing at the State prequel.
The Carthage lineup consisted of Tanner Putt at 106 lbs., Dylan Huntley, 113 lbs., Christian Brown, 120 lbs., Bradyn Tate, 126 lbs., Kip Castor, 132 lbs., Eli Sneed, 138 lbs., Grey Petticrew, 145 lbs., Braxdon Tate 152 lbs., Davion King, 160 lbs., Brett Rockers, 170 lbs., and David Recinos at 285 lbs. Sneed, Petticrew, Tate and King finished second, third, third and first, respectively, earning themselves a State berth at this week’s MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships in Columbia, MO on February 17, 18 and 19.
In true fashion, the district tournament was nothing less than what the team expected in terms of competition. Five Carthage grapplers made it the bubble round, only to be handed their second losses in the double elimination tournament. Tanner Putt, Dylan Huntley, Bradyn Tate, Kip Castor and David Recinos were close to a state bid, but also have at least two years to make it there.
“Tanner and David are my freshman bookends at the lowest and highest weight classes, and they both stepped in for us when both Ayden Nye and Malachi Housh suffered season ending injuries during and before the season started. They have both filled huge spots for us and were not intimidated by the positions they were thrust into. We’re all still riding the high from David’s pin during the last match of the night in the Neosho dual that clinched the win for us. I expect Tanner to get stronger as he matures, which will only improve his ability to win matches,” said Head Coach Kenny Brown.
Sophomores Huntley, Tate and Castor all fought hard and are expected to be contenders next year.
“Bradyn (Tate) was definitely in the toughest weight class in our district,” said Brown. “We knew going in that he was going to have a tough road, but he wrestled hard and we know what we need to work on for next year. It’s just tough when he qualified for State as a freshman. The great thing about Bradyn is that he has a tenacity and work ethic that ensures he will be the first kid in the room lifting, doing yoga, learning new technique, and soaking in everything he can get his hands on.”
Carthage News Online will have daily coverage of the MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, starting Thursday, February 17 at 5 p.m. Fans not able to attend can watch live broadcasts on mshsaa.tv for a $10 fee.
Here are the Carthage Wrestling results from the Class 4 District 4 Wrestling Tournament on 02/11-12/22 in Nixa. Carthage next wrestles in the State Wrestling Tournament on 02/17-19/22 in Columbia at Mizzou Arena.
