SPRINGFIELD — The Carthage high school girls basketball team opened its season with a 23-0 lead after the first quarter pacing the way to a 79-33 road win over Hillcrest on Tuesday.
The Tigers’ defense started the second half just as strong as the first after outscoring the Hornets 26-4 in the third quarter.
Kianna Yates led the way for Carthage (1-0) with 21 points, followed by Hailey Fullerton with 20 and Presley Probert with 13. Lauren Wilson chipped in seven and Katie Crowe and Landy Cochran each scored six.
Carthage made 12 three-pointers and went 13 for 15 from the free-throw line. The Tigers are back in action against Kickapoo in the Carthage Invitational Dec. 3.
