Dr. Barbra Schantz Louis, 81, of Carthage, Missouri, passed away Monday, October 10, 2022. Barbra was born on November 26, 1940, in Dover, New Jersey, the daughter of the late Henry and Priscilla (Schantz) Louis. Barbra earned her Doctorate in Adult Education from Rutgers University. She was the Dean of Adult and Continuing Education at Santa Barbara City College. She was a Unitarian Universalist by faith and an active member of the Alpine, California Kiwanis and Soroptimist Clubs.
Dr. Louis had a great zest for life. She was an independent spirit, world traveler, activist, educator, poet, friend to many and lover of animals. She was crazy about Little Richard, Elvis and Marvin Gaye. She was a “Jersey girl” through and through and loved her hometown of Dover (go Tigers!). She lived life on her terms to the end.
She is survived by three daughters, Candace Spizzirri (Marc), of Pennsylvania, Lynn Petsch (Bob) of California, and Amber Gelwicks (Lee) of Missouri; a sister, Helen Pettersen, a brother, Robert Louis (Carol), four nieces, nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and her beloved cat, Bimple.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
