Carthage’s centerpiece, the Jasper County Courthouse, looks like a scene from a snow globe during the heavy snow that fell early on Monday. This winter storm was the earliest snowfall of more than an inch in 21 years, according to the National Weather Service in Springfield. Snowfall totals of three to four inches were common across the area and forced the cancellation of school in Carthage as well as other events. Stewart Johnson / The Carthage Press
