The Carthage Deli will celebrate its 40th anniversary on March 26, 2019. Chris and Mary Brown, current owners, have owned the business for more than 20 years. In 1998 they purchased the business from Mike and Sally Randolph. The Randolph’s had purchased the business from the founders of the Deli, Tom and Corrine Candela.

“The patrons of Carthage are a wonderful part of the history at the Deli,” said Mary. “Every morning at 7 a.m. a terrific group of guys including veterans, bankers, judges, farmers, morticians and many more arrive to have their morning coffee, shoot the breeze and solve the world’s problems. They have been a part of the Deli family for over 20 years and we look forward to seeing them every day.”

The Deli serves breakfast, lunch and dinner to hometown folks, neighboring cities as well as many tourists from a variety of countries. They enjoy visiting with tourists from all over the world. Tourists always comment on what a beautiful town Carthage is and how glad they are that they stopped to see the sites of the town.

Chris and Mary’s children Amanda Buxton, Brandon Brown and Nathan Brown have all worked at the store throughout the years. Nathan met his wife, Christina Clark, at the store a few years ago when she worked summers at the store. Nathan and Christina have since taken over managing roles at the store. They know a very large part of then customers’ names and usual orders and enjoy visiting with the great people of Carthage.

For the last 11 years the Browns have given away free brownies on Tuesdays.

“Free Brownie Tuesday has long been a tradition and it is fitting that the Deli’s 40th anniversary falls on a Tuesday,” said Mary and Chris.  “Stop by and see us at 301 S Main St, across from the Sherriff’s office. We will be handing out anniversary brownies that day and hope to see many of our family and friends that day. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful 40 years.”

  1. Being a Carthaginian transplant to California, it always amazes people when I tell them my home town has a castle in the center of town and a deli across the square better than anything on either coast. Then I pull out a pic from my wallet. Or, now days, pics of downtown inclusive of Maple Leaf Parade on the phone. They marvel and exclaim, how lucky it must be to call Carthage home!

    Signed,
Once a Tiger, always a Tiger.
