MANHATTAN, Ks – The 2020 National 4-H Meat Evaluation and Identification Contest took place on October 20, 2020, as a part of the American Royal Livestock Show. The contest was hosted by Kansas State University in Manhattan, Ks.
Youth involved with the meats judging program develop key life skills to aid in their future career success. Through involvement in a 4-H, judging team members must make rapid, logical decisions and defend their decisions via oral reasons. Students improve their ability for critical thinking and accurate communication. In addition, students become organized and self-disciplined, learn to accept criticism, develop self-confidence and become leaders.
Participants included Luke Anibal, 17, of Carthage; Korbin Fast, 17, of Jasper; Shem Miller, 15, of Carthage; and Brett Rockers, 17, of Carthage. The contest consisted of 6 meat evaluation classes, three of which required oral reasons, and a retail cuts identification class. The team placed 7th overall at the contest.
Jasper County 4-H would like to thank Cloud’s Meats for the donation of lab coats, hard hats, and hairnets required to participate in the contest.
