The Carthage Tigers ended their regular season with two wins over district rivals Ray-Pec and Waynesville and a fifth-place finish in the Central Ozark Conference Tournament.  While sickness and injury have plagued the Tigers the second half of the season, key victories over last year’s Class 4 District 4 champions (Ray-Pec) and perpetual powerhouse Waynesville helped boost the confidence of the somewhat beleaguered team. Bonus points were a major factor in both Tiger wins, as many matches were won by fall.

“I was pleased with the kids’ ability to rally around the adversity they faced. We had a ton of kids out sick, crazy injuries and it affects morale in a big way. The fact that they were able to rise above it speaks volumes about the team makeup,” said Carthage Wrestling Coach Kenny Brown.

Unfortunately, not having a full lineup worked against the Tigers at Saturday’s COC Tournament in Joplin, where Carthage was missing four key members of the varsity squad.

“It’s great to have the depth that we have as a team when we get into situations like we are now, dealing with sickness and injury. The downside is that you can’t throw a newbie into the deep end of the pool and expect the same results as someone who has been wrestling against these tough guys all year. Sometimes the better decision is to leave an open weight class for this type of tournament and focus on getting everyone healthy before districts, where it really counts,” Coach Brown stated. “The reality of the situation is that, first and foremost, health is a priority. It’s great to have a phenomenal team, but not when it puts my guys at risk.”

Carthage heads to Jefferson City Friday and Saturday, Febr. 14 and 15 for the Class 4 District 4 Tournament. The state tournament follows Feb. 20, 21 and 22 at Mizzou Arena on the campus of the University of Missouri – Columbia.

Here are the results from our double dual with Waynesville and Ray-Pec on 01/30/20 at Carthage.  Carthage finishes 10-1 on the season.
