Carthage R-9 Board hires VanSlyke as junior high assistant principal, accepts track coach’s retirement

CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Carthage R-9 Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, January 15, 2024, 6:00 pm, at Carthage South Technical Center. Present were Board members Jeff Jones, Bill Lasley, Niki Cloud, Ryan Collier, and Lora Phelps. Patrick Scott arrived after the meeting started. Nathan Terry was absent. Jeff Jones led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Board approved the Consent Agenda for the purpose of approving the meeting agenda, minutes of previous meeting, payment of bills, district financial report, internal business procedures manual, and MSIP 6 Standard: effective teaching and learning, 21st century success-ready graduates.

Dr. Boyer stated the MSIP 6 Standard: Curriculum report will be presented in the February 19, 2024 board meeting.

Mr. Jones provided a Carthage R-9 School Foundation update highlighting the Trivia Night fundraiser will be held February 10th at Specialty Risk Insurance at 10385 Blackberry Road, Carthage, Missouri.

The board approved a notice of election for the April 2, 2024, General Municipal Election to elect two board of directors to serve a term of three years.

Dr. Goodnight and Dan Hill, Director of Maintenance, presented the bid package for the general construction, grading, utilities, turf, and field lighting for the baseball stadium. A formal pre-bid meeting and walk-through of the project is scheduled for February 7th at 10:00am at the proposed site at 2600 S. River St., Carthage, MO 64836.

Dr. Boyer updated the Board regarding the following:

  • Bus routes for students are updated and overall going well.
  • Thank you to the custodial, maintenance, and transportation staff for all your hard work in the buildings and buses during the inclement weather.
  • Out of school AMI Day 1 will be January 16, 2024.
  • Thank you again to the generous donors for the Carthage baseball stadium – K.D. & M.L. Steadley Trust, McCune Brooks Trust, local businesses, and numerous individuals in our community.

The Board met in closed session immediately following the regular meeting to discuss legal, personnel, and student matters, and evaluative personnel reports in compliance with Section 610.021 (1), (3), (6), and (13) of the Revised Statutes of Missouri.

In closed session the Board approved the following personnel actions:

Approved the employment of certified, support, and substitute staff as presented contingent upon receiving a clear criminal record check from the Missouri Highway Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation, and a clear check of the Adult Abuse/Neglect Registry maintained by the Missouri Department of Social Services for all employees new to the district:
