The Carthage Tiger wrestling team capped off their pre-Christmas schedule with a varsity two-day tournament in Harrisonville, MO, a girl’s tournament in Fayetteville, AR and a meet at Bentonville West High School. The tigers finished in third place at the Harrisonville Holiday Tournament, with strong competition from schools such as Helias Catholic, Fort Zumwalt South (St. Louis), Pacific, Carl Junction and Warrensburg. Senior, Bradyn Tate captured the championship title at 138 lbs., with four pins, a technical fall, a major decision, a decision and a forfeit. Tate’s win solidifies a strong senior year for the veteran wrestler, with hopes to stand on the podium next month at the State Tournament.
Junior Tanner Putt finished second at the Harrisonville Tournament, barely losing his championship match to Zayden Teson of Warrenton in a 2-0 decision. Putt entered the tournament with an 11-1 record. Fellow junior, David Recinos, brought home a fourth-place finish at the 215 lb. weight class. Recinos was forced to medical forfeit due to injury during his third-place match.

While the varsity boys competed at Harrisonville, three girls traveled to Fayetteville for the Battle of the Bling Tournament. While small girls teams are common in a school’s inaugural year, Coach Nate Kelly is confident that his team is bringing more light to the sport and encouraging more girls to go out for wrestling.

The Bentonville West dual was a new pick up for the tigers this year before Christmas. On the girls’ side, 115 lb. Maylee Brown captured the only points for team the with her pin over Rylie Sminchak. Bentonville reigned superior with a 42-6 win overall.
For the boys, Carthage dominated with eight pins on the evening for a 54-24 win. Tanner Putt led the charge at 106 lbs., which was followed by pins from Caden Groom (113 lbs.), Kelvin Alvarez (120 lbs.), Wyatt Hole (126 lbs.), Grady Huntley (132 lbs.), Bradyn Tate (138 lbs.), Lenny Escobar (165 lbs.) and Latrell Abbasi (190 lbs.).
