It was a packed house at Carthage High School Tuesday night, where the battle of the undefeated took place between the Carthage Tiger and the Neosho Wildcat wrestling teams. Ranked number one in Class 3 in the state of Missouri, Neosho boasted several individually ranked wrestlers for the matchup. Carthage, currently ranked number seven in Class 4, found themselves at a disadvantage with the loss of heavyweight and state placer Brener Ocana, who was injured last month at a tournament.
Led by a strong team that had not lost a dual or tournament all year, Carthage was ultimately subdued by the depth of Neosho’s team and lost the meet 51-20. Adding insult to injury (literally) was the season-ending broken arm suffered by freshman Luke Gall (170 lbs, 21-3 on the season) during his match with Neosho’s Keaton Sanders.
“That kind of let the wind out of our sails,” said Carthage Head Coach Kenny Brown. “It’s hard to concentrate on a meet when you’re already behind and worried about your teammate. Especially when that kid is so tough, works hard and never complains. It’s obviously a huge loss for us. We’ll now rely on Luke in a different role and know that he’ll step up as a motivator and coach.”
Rivals since the Coach Holman era, Neosho and Carthage always rely on each other to put forth the best competition in preparation for conference, districts and state. With the Central Ozarks Conference Tournament next Saturday, look for many of the same matchups to replay in a change for some vindication.
Here are the results from the Black and Blue Brawl between Carthage and Neosho on 01/21/20. Carthage is now 7-1 on the season and will next wrestle in the Platte County Invitational on 01/24-25/20.
