The Carthage men join the ladies in adding three wrestlers to the trip to Columbia.  Senior Tanner Putt, sophomore Caden Groom and sophomore Randy Teo qualified for this year’s MSHSAA Class 4 Wrestling Championships in Columbia, MO, starting Friday, February 28th.  Following the grand march of all the state qualifiers, the men’s competition will begin at 5pm at Mizzou Arena.  The event brings together the best in the state for two days of high-level competition in a double elimination bracket format.

While Carthage didn’t bring home an individual champion in any weight class, Randy Teo and Caden Groom finished second in their respective weights at 106 and 126.  Randy started the weekend off strong with pins over Smith-Cotton and Lebanon, then a major decision over Lee’s Summit West’s Cameron Koelzer.  Neosho’s Marztian Ioanis just barely eased Teo out of first place in the finals match, with a 7-6 decision that earned him the district championship.  Teo will face off against Liberty’s Rowdy Angst in the first round of the MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships on Friday.  Angst is a freshman with a 27-9 record.

Groom forged a similar path with a fall over Ray-Pec’s Jayden Peek, then a major decision over Lebanon’s Kaden Branch.  A semifinal win over Stotts from Neosho gave Groom bonus points with a major decision and put him in the finals against Ozark’s Keaton Hurst. Hurst emerged victorious with an 11-5 decision and a spot at the top of the podium.  Groom will match up with freshman Noah Brown from Francis Howell North, who is 35-6 on the year.

Senior, Tanner Putt, had a wild ride to the state tournament this year, finishing fourth in his 120-pound weight class.  Things started out easy for Putt with a pin over Ozark in the first round and a decision over Lee’s Summit West in the second.  Putt hit a speed bump in the semifinals, however, when he dropped a tight match to Ray-Pec’s Kamden VonHolten, 6-5.  Tanner came back to win his consolation match against Lebanon’s Joseph Garner, 5-4, putting him in the running for a third-place finish. Branson’s Ryzen Isringhausen had other ideas, though, and came away with 4-0 victory.  Putt will carry a 34-9 record to the state championships, and will face off against Park Hill’s Erik Egstad, a senior with a 34-6 record in the first round.

Carthage finished in 8th place overall at the Class 4, District 3 tournament.
