MSSU Men’s Track and Field finishes 3rd at 2019 MIAA Championships

WARRENSBURG, Mo. — The Missouri Southern men’s track and field team finished third overall today after the final day of the 2019 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Central Missouri inside of Walton Stadium.

The Lions had two event wins and five All-MIAA performances. Southern scored 119 points and finished three points out of second-place and 12 away from first-place.

Nickson Kiptoo got one of the event wins on the day as he took home gold in the 3k steeplechase with a time of 9:15.44. Tadd Capron finished 13th in the event.

Gidieon Kimutai took home the title in the 5k as the Lions had four runners in the top-five. Kimutai finished in a time of 14:34.78, 28 seconds in front of second-place and teammate Cody Berry, who earned All-MIAA status, as well. Josh Webb was fourth, while Kiptoo placed fifth. Kevin Koester was 16th and Jarod Ozee placed 17th.

Kennan Harrison finished fourth in the triple jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 49-03.75, while Brendan Watkins was seventh and Adrain Broadus placed 11th.

Travis Petersen picked up All-MIAA status with a second-place finish in the hammer throw, tossing a huge distance of 215-11, an NCAA automatic qualifying mark and breaking his previous school record by more than ten feet. Josh Fulmer was seventh, while Trace Henault placed 12th. Rajeim Carby was second in the javelin with an All-MIAA performance of 216-04, hitting a provisional mark in the process.

Jon Johnson was seventh in the finals of hte 400m dash, turning in a time of 28.80, while Nathan Painter was fifth and Ryan Drendel 19th in the 1,500m. Painter turned in a time of 3:54.81. Ivan Colbert finished fifth in the finals of the 110m hurdles, hitting a time of 14.79.

In total, the Lions had ten All-MIAA performances and four event wins at the Championships. Below is a detailed list of the Lions’ All-MIAA performers.
