CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Tuesday night’s dual versus the Carl Junction Bulldogs did not yield the results that coach Kenny Brown and the Carthage Tigers were hoping for. With several changes in the lineup due to injuries, weight management plan guidelines and grade requirements, the Tigers lost a tough dual, 39-34.
Brown, however was quick to applaud the effort put forth by not only the veterans, but also the newer members of the team stepping into the varsity lineup to fill the voids.
“I’m proud of my varsity guys for stepping into that leadership role that we count on, but also the new guys that were willing to put aside their fears and wrestle varsity in a dual we knew was going to be a nail-biter. I put this loss on me. Some of my younger wrestlers lacked the mental and technical preparation to perform at their best, especially when faced with a potential loss. That is something that the coaching staff and I will work to impress upon the entire team, as we never want to give up lots of bonus points with technical falls and pins.”
While the varsity lineup does not compete in a tournament this weekend, junior varsity will travel to Frontenac, Kansas on Saturday. The JV and varsity teams will travel to Miami on Tuesday, December 7th for a double dual against Miami and Columbus, which Coach Brown hopes will give the team more confidence and experience as they firm up the lineup. Thursday, December 9th sees the team at Wal-Mart, ringing the bells for the Salvation Army’s Christmas fundraising campaign before varsity makes the long trip to Farmington for its first tournament.
Coach Brown is especially excited about this season, as it marks the 50th anniversary of the beginning of wrestling in Carthage, MO, and his 20th year as head coach of the team.

“To say that we’re a part of something special is an understatement. I’ve been fortunate to be able to build on the strong foundation laid before me by Roger Kirby, Herb Winslow and Bob Holman. Each year the standards get higher and our expectations for the team grow. I always want our team and coaches to understand the part they play in representing not only our school, but this sport that teaches us so much about character, on and off the mat.”
