CARTHAGE, Mo. — Head coaches Nate Kelly and Shelby Swinehart started off the season strong with wins by the Carthage young men and women Tuesday night over the Carl Junction wrestling team. The “assembly” dual began at 2pm at CHS, and allowed Carthage students that weren’t normally able to attend to come watch during their seminar period at the end of the day. Next year, Carl Junction will host at their gym.
The afternoon began with impressive wins by the junior varsity, claiming five of the eight matches wrestled. 132-pound Jace Nichols posted a pin over his opponent, Tanner Carter, to get the ball rolling for Carthage, while Carter then countered with a win over Carthage’s Dan Alejandro in a second match. At 144 pounds, both Eddy Puerto and Douglas Ball earned wins with a fall and technical fall, respectively, with Carl Junction’s Logan Meyer picking up a win for their side over Erwin Paxtor. The 157-pound weight class split with Carthage taking the victory with Eli Smith’s fall over Ian Norris, and CJ’s Gray Messer picking up a major decision over Eli in a second match. Steve Serious brought home the last win of the jv matches with a fall over Owen Beck at the 215 pound weight class.
The Carthage ladies showed off some impressive skills and numbers this year, with ten girls participating in fourteen weight classes. While only three matches were wrestled, Carthage emerged victorious in two out of three on the afternoon. Freshman Kaylee James started the ladies off with a fall over Carl Junction’s Jazmyne Blaney at 130 pounds, followed by Irish Lee at 140 pounds earning a second fall over Resel Rehobson. At 170 pounds, Carl Junction picked up the win with a fall over Adrianna Patrick. With forfeits factored in, Carthage came away with a 36-24 victory.
The varsity men started off strong with a win at 106 by Carthage’s Randy Teo, who came away with a fall over Landon Fields. CJ’s Carter Foglesong countered, however, at 113 with his own pin over Tanner Putt. Carthage chalked up two in a row at 126 and 132 as Caden Groom and Grady Huntley added a major decision and fall to the team score. But the back and forth continued with a CJ pin by Cole Messer over Dylan Evans at 138, followed by Emerson Ixcol’s decision at 144 over CJ’s Jax Merrell. Aydan Nye tabbed a decisive win with his fall at 150 pounds over Nic Foulk, that was followed by another CJ counter when Aaron Dillingham pinned Bradley Guzman at 165 pounds. Lenny Escobar and Latrell Abbasi swayed the score back in Carthage’s favor with two consecutive pins at 175 and 190. Carl Junction’s hammer, Tony Stewart, picked up the major decision, however, over David Recinos at 215. The forfeit at 285 swayed the evening firmly in Carthage’s favor, though, with a Jaxton Lopez win. Carthage competes this weekend at Farmington and will be back in action dualling Webb City Tuesday night at Webb City.
