No Fooling! SIGNS & WONDERS is here at last! On Friday, April 1, 2022, at noon, artCentral’s green door of hospitality is opening to welcome you. From 6:00-8:00 p.m., the Artists Reception will take place in Katherine Hyde’s elegant foursquare American farmhouse at 1110 East Thirteenth Street in Carthage. All art lovers are invited. Admission is free. Libations and hors d’oeuvres will be served. SPELLBOUND Boutique in Carthage, Missouri, is the gracious underwriter for SIGNS & WONDERS.
This collaborative mixed media exhibition has been four years in the making by my artist husband David Greenwood-Mathé and me. With full-time day jobs leaving us limited hours for painting and sculpting, week after week, month after month, we have dedicated our Sunday afternoons to our creative pursuits in our twinned studios. Now we have a collection of work sufficient to fill all the galleries of Hyde House. We are excited to share our creations with you!
Amused art friends have noted that our exhibition begins on April Fool’s Day. Fools for art—this is who we are and pleased to be so. There is an esoteric teaching that suggests “Two fools in love are like two nothings that link up to make a ‘lemniscate’—the horizontal eight which stands for infinity.”
Unpacking this ancient wisdom, what do we discover? There is no denying we are indeed two fools in love—in love with each other, in love with our life together—our home and our furries, our family and friends, our art-making and our artistic community, especially artCentral, and our sweet hometown, Carthage. Like the lemniscate, the list of our loves goes infinitely on and on!
SIGNS & WONDERS is our newest collective, creative expression of so much in our world we find to love and celebrate—the mysteries of our inner lives, the cacophony of spring birds a’courtin’, the sweet surprises and guiding epiphanies that come to us in our meditations and our wanderings, the textural pleasures of tree barks. We have oh, so much to love when we breathe and pause and stop, when we look and listen and celebrate.
More ancient wisdom tells us, “The two fools of the lemniscate have two privileges—the gift of not knowing all the answers and the gift of learning new ideas.” To not know but to seek to find is an innate characteristic of many an artist. Certainly this is true for us! We do love that as we seek and wait to learn something new, often answers will come when others view our creations and tell us what they see or understand—as though our art offers new stories and then others show up to make their contributions of insight and meaning.
We do hope you will come converse and celebrate with us! Come see what we have made to share with you. Tell us what you see. We will be listening for what you bring to our creations.
Not able to attend the Opening Reception? No worries! You will have plenty of other opportunities to enjoy what we have made. Through May 21, Weekend Gallery Hours for SIGNS & WONDERS will be Fridays and Saturdays, 12:00-5:00 p.m. I will be at artCentral to visit with you on Fridays. On Saturday afternoons members of artCentral’s Board of Directors and volunteer artCentral members will serve as gallery docents to greet you.
