Jack D. Howerton, 88, Carthage, Missouri, passed away Tuesday afternoon, December 1, 2020, at St. Luke’s Nursing Center, Carthage.
Jack was born January 30, 1932, in Monett, Missouri to Earl and Alma I. (Spain) Howerton. He was a 1949 graduate of Monett High School where he played football, basketball, and ran track. He then attended junior college in Hutchinson, Kansas, and went on to earn his business degree from Monett Junior College. Jack married Betty Jean Ziegelbein on February 1, 1953, in Monett, Missouri. He worked for Vaisey Bristol Shoe Company, and then for Leggett & Platt until his retirement in 1997. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 39 years, Betty, being an excellent caregiver for her during her 27-year illness. He was a founding and faithful member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Carthage.
Survivors include his children, Karen Perkins (Chuck), Carthage, Barry Howerton and (Randi), Huntington Beach, California, Robert Howerton, Carthage, and Andy Howerton, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Shelley Wilson (Wayne), Carthage, Dustin Perkins (Melanie), Carthage, Brett Howerton, Huntington Beach, Drew Howerton (Leslie), Bixby, Oklahoma, Caleb Howerton (Crosby), Sheldon, Missouri, and Drake Howerton, Broken Arrow; great-grandchildren, Emmalee Wilson, Laney Wilson, Boyd Perkins, Jaclyn Friesen, Grady Friesen, and Nolan Perkins, all of Carthage; and many extended family and friends.
He was preceded by his parents; and his wife, Betty Jean Howerton.
Private family graveside services will be held. Jack will lie in state from 8 am – 5 pm, Friday, December 4, 2020, at Knell Mortuary for those that would like to sign the register book and pay respects. Memorial gifts are suggested to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in care of Knell Mortuary.
