CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Carthage R-9 School District is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Sheila Denefrio, a dedicated educator whose life and work profoundly impacted the Carthage community throughout her 11 years of teaching in the district.

Sheila Denefrio, 58, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. A proud graduate of Carthage High School, class of 1983, Sheila’s passion for learning led her to Missouri Southern State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Education degree. She furthered her commitment to education by attaining her Master of Education degree from Pittsburg State University.

Sheila’s academic pursuits were the foundation of her dedication to the students she served. As a teacher of English as a Second Language at Carthage Junior High School, Sheila inspired countless young minds to explore the rich tapestry of language. Before her tenure in Carthage, she made significant contributions to the Joplin School District’s educational community. Her commitment to her students was unwavering, and her impact on their lives is immeasurable.

Dr. Brittany Bridges, Carthage Junior High Assistant Principal, shares, “Sheila was a quiet and kind leader for CJHS. She operated on the principles of love, family, and faith. Her gentle approach to students showcased her compassion and patience, and she exemplified respect with her every action. Sheila had a passion for teaching students who were emerging bilinguals, and her belief in their abilities was contagious. The Junior High simply won’t be the same without her.”

Memorial services will be held at 10 am, Friday, June 7, 2024, at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Memorial gifts are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in care of Knell Mortuary. Online condolences may be expressed through www.knellmortuary.com.

District counselors will be available at Carthage Junior High School to support grieving students and staff members during this difficult time.
