JOPLIN – The Area Agency on Aging, Region X senior centers in Noel, Neosho, Joplin, Webb City, Carl Junction, Carthage, and Lamar will not be opening on May 4, 2020. The Area Agency on Aging will be following the three-phase plan outlined by the Trump Administration. Before these phases begin, states must meet criteria showing evidence of a downward trajectory of Covid-19 and influenza-type illnesses in 14-day increments. Once there is an indication of fewer reported cases and positive tests, the first of the three phases begins.

Phase one recommends strict social distancing and discourages gatherings of more than 10 people. Nonessential travel should be avoided. Phase two states social distancing should continue and gatherings of larger groups are allowed, not to exceed 50 people unless precautions are made. Phase three sees a return to normal business for most Americans. New cases of Covid-19 will continue to be identified and isolated. Checkpoints must be passed for each phase to begin.

Governor Mike Parson states in his “Show Me Strong Recovery” plan, to begin May 4, social distancing is still required through May 31. It has been encouraged by Gov. Parson to limit access for businesses who are unable to provide the six-foot social distancing rule, therefore, the senior centers in Barton, Jasper, Newton and McDonald counties will remain closed.

The Area Agency on Aging, Region X, is aiming for June 1, 2020 as a reopening date. The Centers for Disease Control states older adults (65 years of age and older) are in a high-risk category and can develop more severe symptoms of Covid-19. We know it is in the best interest of the health of the senior population to not open before June 1. We are not able to guarantee social distancing guidelines during meal and recreation times at the senior centers. The Area Agency on Aging will be following the guidelines of protecting that vulnerable class of people.
