Carthage Coach Kenny Brown wasn’t sure what to expect heading into this year’s Class 4 District 3 tournament in Jefferson City, MO. But in the final leg of a season plagued with sickness and injury, Carthage grapplers proved why they are a powerhouse program, qualifying nine wrestlers for this year’s MSHSAA State Championship Tournament. While newcomers to the Class 4 ranks, the Tigers still couldn’t close the gap with the district host Jeff City, though, after a first-round loaded with byes and bonus points put up by the Jays.
“Up until the finals round I thought our boys fought for every point and win they got,” said Coach Brown. “I think it’s easy to feel relieved once you know you’ve qualified for the state tournament – like the pressure is off – but I definitely want to see full effort continue all three days. When your individual effort affects how well your team places, there is definitely a need to give it your all. Wrestling is deceptive in that you’re out on the mat all by yourself, so there is no hiding behind your teammates, but make no mistake, your teammates and your practice partners depend on you to give it your all. The saying ‘You’re only as strong as your weakest link’ has never been more relevant.”
While no strangers to the state tournament, the Carthage Tigers have traditionally competed amongst the ranks of other Class 3 powerhouses such as Neosho and Willard.
“Competing in Class 4 is no joke. The teams in Kansas City and St. Louis have unfettered access to each other, with most being less than an hour away. Their tournaments are larger and more competitive and they are typically wrestling nationally ranked kids every week. For Southwest Missouri to have that option, we typically have to travel several hours. It makes me proud to see what our boys have done and how they’ve made names for themselves within these ranks. While I love to see the reputation of SW MO wrestling grow, I’m always still happy to fly under the radar,” said Brown. “There’s nothing better than upsetting someone’s expectations of you by knocking off an amazing wrestler with an unexpected win.”
The Tigers travel to Columbia Wednesday and begin competition on Thursday at Mizzou Arena for this year’s MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships.
Here are the Carthage Wrestling Class 4 District 3 Wrestling Results from Jefferson City on 02/14-15/20. The top 4 place finishers qualify for the State Wrestling Tournament in Columbia on 02/20-22/2020 with wrestling starting at 3:30 on Thursday.
