Ozark Gateway Master Gardeners Plant Sale on tap

The Ozark Gateway Master Gardeners’ 2019 Plant Sale, their sole annual fundraiser, will be held at Powers Museum in Carthage on Saturday, May 4th from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Several different types of plants will be available, including heirloom vegetable and herb transplants, annual and perennial flowers, native plants, shrubs, trees, houseplants and succulents, as well as garden art, mason bee houses and other garden objects. All funds raised by this event go to support scholarships for Jasper County students, creation and maintenance of public projects undertaken by the Master Gardeners, and educational events for students, gardeners, and the community at large.

In addition to vegetables like cucumbers, eggplants, gourds, peppers (sweet, bell and hot), squash and zucchini, several heirloom tomatoes will be available Varieties will include Amish Paste, Aunt Ruby’s German Green, Big Rainbow, Box Car Willie, Cherokee Purple, German Johnson, Mortgage Lifter, Pink Bumble Bee, and more. Herbs such as basil, dill, parsley, and thyme will be on hand, as will flowering plants like four o’clocks, marigolds, morning glories, and white and pink zinnias as well as various houseplants. Examples of trees for sale include lacebark elms, redbuds, white oaks and willow oaks.

The Ozark Gateway Master Gardeners utilize the funds raised to benefit the local area. Some of their most recent projects include Crosslines Churches of Joplin Food Pantry Garden, Shoal Creek Conservation Center (formerly Wildcat Glades) Demonstration Garden, Carthage Library Garden, the Webb City Kids Garden and Webb City Farmers Market and Empire District Market kids activities.
