The Carthage Tiger Wrestling team traveled to Bolivar, Missouri on January 10th to wrestle the Liberators on their home turf. In a dual that began with two hard-fought wins for Bolivar grapplers, the Tigers showed their depth and earned victories in nine of the remaining fourteen matches – all of which were major decisions or pins.
“It’s great to see our kids really starting to hit their stride at this point in the season, “said Coach Kenny Brown. “We have some guys that have worked really hard over the last year or two to develop their skills, and it shows when you wrestle a team as tough as Bolivar. They definitely have some strong, talented individuals that aren’t willing to go down without a fight.”
As Carthage advances to the last month of the season with an 8-0 record, Coach Brown continues to rely on his team’s ability to master the fundamentals and overcome weaknesses. “Nothing is guaranteed in wrestling. I’ve seen 3-time state champs fall in a semifinals match to a virtual unknown, and watched any number of kids succumb to nerves and the magnitude of a situation. More often than not, though, hard work, muscle memory and good practice partners get you where you need to be. Our guys have really put in the time and effort in the room, and I’ve worked them hard. This is definitely a marathon rather than a sprint.”
As Brown prepares the next generation of Junior Varsity wrestlers for the step up to varsity, it’s easy to see that the depth and numbers on the team reflect a commitment to the Tiger work ethic. Of the 41 jv contenders that traveled to Labette County, Carthage brought home 14 champions and 9 runners-up. Coach Brown was pleased with the level at which the guys competed. “I always like working with newer wrestlers, especially when they are so open-minded and willing to learn. We had several kids that were able to put their first “W” on the board, and that always helps motivate them.”
The Tiger Wrestling Team travels to Neosho January 15th, Webb City January 22nd and is back home for Senior Night versus McDonald County and Marshfield on January 24th.
