The Carthage Tiger Wrestling team traveled across the state last weekend for varsity, junior varsity and girls’ tournaments in Excelsior Springs, Seneca and Monett, MO. The varsity boys added to their success this year with a great showing at the Excelsior Springs Tournament. Senior Bradyn Tate (138 lbs.) and junior David Recinos (215 lbs.) both emerged as champions of their weight classes, with Tate scoring bonus points in all but the championship match. With only two losses on the season, Tate improves to 23-2 overall. Recinos had two close victories in overtime in rounds one and two, followed by a fall and decision to win the tournament at 215 lbs. Junior Tanner Putt entered the tournament with a 19-2 record at 106 lbs. and finished the day in 3rd place with three pins, a bye and a close loss to Hillsboro’s James Penick in the 4th round.
Sophomore Grady Huntley (17-7) also placed 3rd at 132 lbs., scoring bonus points in all his matches wrestled, with a fall, technical fall, and two major decisions. Sophomore Lenny Escobar turned in a solid performance at 165 lbs. to earn a 3rd place medal, as well. 2-2 on the day, Escobar sealed his standing with a pin in the final round over Warrensburg’s Trace Marr. Junior Jaxton Lopez also placed 3rd in the B pool at 285 lbs., going 2-2 on the day. At 190 lbs., Alexander Salas Marquez finished fourth on the day with a 2-3 record.
The junior varsity team traveled to Seneca, MO for a Saturday tournament last weekend. Carthage 132 lb. wrestler Mason Pugh capped the day with a first-place finish. After a first-round bye, Pugh pinned his second and fourth round opponents, winning third round by injury default. The Tigers also had four 4th place finishers in freshmen Jace Nichols (113 lbs.) and Denis Velasquez (106 lbs.), sophomore Franky Contreras (138 lbs.) and junior Uziel Teo (120 lbs.)
The girls’ team also stayed in Southwest Missouri for the Monett Girls Invitational. Freshman Irish Lee placed highest for the Tigers, earning a 4th place finish. Freshmen Emmy Hernandez and Mischa Drackert both finished 6th, while junior Maylee Brown brought home the 5th place finish.
