JOPLIN, Mo. — The Missouri Southern baseball team scored three runs in the first and held to take out Washburn University 4-3 tonight in game one of the MIAA Series at Warren Turner Field.
The Lions (13-5, 5-2 MIAA) got a strong start from Zach Parish as he went five innings, striking out six and allowing just one hit to move to 3-0 on the season. River Wright threw an inning, while Bradly Hershey was stellar in his two innings of relief. Cam Bednar picked up save number 4 in a scoreless ninth. The Lions held Washburn to just three hits in the game.
Mike Million, Dexter Swims and Freddie Landers all had two hits, while Troy Gagan had a home run and two RBIs, while scoring once. Davin Gummere, Million and Swims all scored a run each. Denver Coffee and Swims had an RBI each.
Washburn (8-8, 3-4 MIAA) had three players with a hit each.
Southern started the scoring with three in the first as Swims doubled to score Gummere and then Gagan homered to left following that to score Swims.
Coffee added an RBI double in the third to score Million and make the score 4-0.
Washburn added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, but the Southern bullpen held the Ichabods scoreless in the final three frames.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon with a 1 pm first-pitch from Turner Field.
