JOPLIN, Mo. — The No. 19 ranked Missouri Southern baseball team completed its second-straight MIAA series sweep as the Lions took out Fort Hays State today 7-4 on Warren Turner Field.
Southern (18-6, 10-2 MIAA) got a big day from Mike Million at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, four RBIs and a run scored. Dexter Swims went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Troy Gagan, Freddie Landers, Alex Phillips and Jon Leighton had a hit each, while Davin Gummere, Denver Coffee and Phillips scored a run each.
Will Bausinger started for the Lions and went six innings, striking out seven and walking just two, while he moved his record to 4-1 on the season. River Wright, Logan VanWey and Joey Reeves threw in relief, while Cam Bednar picked up the save in the ninth.
Fort Hays (2-18, 2-10 MIAA) got two hits each from Cody Starkel and Dawson Sramek.
The Tigers got on board first with a run in the third, but the Lions answered right back in the fourth. Million cleared the bases with a double as Phillips, Coffee and Swims scored to put the Lions up 3-1.
Hays got within a run in the fourth, but the Lions went back to work. Million homered in the sixth to make the score 4-2, while Gagan had an RBI single to score Gummere in the seventh, followed by an RBI single from Landers to score Swims.
Hays added two runs in the ninth, but Bednar shut the door.
The Lions will be back in action on Tuesday when Southern plays host to Southwest Baptist in a non-conference matchup. First-pitch from Warren Turner Field is slated for 3 pm.
