MSSU’s Parish strikes out 16 in 1-0 win over Northeastern State

JOPLIN, Mo. — Missouri Southern junior lefty Zach Parish struck out 16 batters and the No. 21 Lions got a bases-loaded walk as Southern defeated Northeastern State 1-0 tonight at Warren Turner Field.

The Lions (27-13, 18-7 MIAA) also broke the single-season record for strikeouts by a pitching staff as the team had 18 K’s on the night, giving them 425 on the season, breaking last year’s mark of 422. Parish went eight innings, striking out 16 and allowing just three hits.

Parish currently has 113 strikeouts on the season, just three shy of tying the individual single-season mark of 116 set by Brett Abel in 2013. Logan VanWey threw a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to pick up save number one on the season.

The Lions had a 2-for-4 day at the plate from Mike Million, while Dexter Swims and Jon Leighton had a hit each. Swims scored the go-ahead run.

The RiverHawks (11-29, 8-17 MIAA) threw well as the Hawks limited the Lions to just four hits on the night. Jaxon Phipps, Colton Burgess and Alex Massie had a hit each for NSU.

The Lions’ only run came in the fourth wne the Lions loaded the bases and Ryan Hunter drove in Swims for the go-ahead run and RBI.
