EMPORIA, Kan. — The Missouri Southern softball team fell to Emporia State in both games of a doubleheader by scores of 4-3 in game one and 6-0 in game two inside the Trusler Softball Complex Monday afternoon.
Game One
The Lions (12-17, 3-9 MIAA) tied the game up at 3-3 after Sidnie Hurst delivered a single up the middle to score two runs in the top of the fifth. Erika Lutgen knocked in the first run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth to cut the deficit to two.
ESU (12-17, 6-4 MIAA) held a 3-0 lead, scoring all its runs in the bottom of the second before the Lions battled back in the fifth.
Each team tried to break the tie in the sixth and seventh innings, but neither scored which forced the game into extras as the Hornets with two outs and a runner on second scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Lexi Ferrari and Josie Tofpi each went 2-for-4 at the plate, including a triple and a run scored from Tofpi.
Game Two
The Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and then added one in the third and fourth for a 3-0 advantage entering the fifth. They then capped off their scoring with a three-run home run in the fifth toward a 6-0 win.
Mikaila Leonhart, Emily Harris, Ashley Cadarella, and Lutgen each provided a hit for the Lions in the loss.
