JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Missouri Southern softball squad swept the Lincoln Blue Tigers leading off with a 10-1 win in game one and following up with a 5-2 victory in game two to close out the MIAA doubleheader Friday afternoon on LU Softball Field.
Game One
The Lions (16-17, 7-9 MIAA) jumped out to a 10-0 lead after three innings played while limiting the Blue Tigers (4-32, 1-17 MIAA) to one run to shut down game one (10-1) at the conclusion of the fifth.
Junior infielders Erika Lutgen and Makaila Leonhart went a combined 4-for-5 at the plate with two homeruns, five runs scored, and six RBIs. Lutgen launched a two-run shot in the first inning while Leonhart crushed a three-run homer to left field to cap off the scoring for the Lions in the third.
Freshman Josie Tofpi added a 2-for-3 line, driving in three and scoring two runs in the process.
Senior pitcher Taurean Guzman (7-6) limited the Blue Tigers to one run (in the fifth) on two hits in five innings pitched for the victory.
Game Two
With a tie game going into the seventh and Elizabeth Windsor on first on a single to shortstop, Leonhart smashed the second pitch she saw over the left field fence for her second home run of the day to give the Lions their first lead of game two (4-2).
Angel Badalamenti singled through the left side five batters later to add another insurance run in the seventh and would remain (5-2) as Lincoln stranded two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Emily Harris recorded a perfect 3-for-3 stand with a run scored while Windsor and Badalamenti both logged 3-for-4 lines in the win.
Guzman (8-6) came in relieve to secure the win by allowing zero runs on three hits and striking out two batters in four innings pitched.
