Carthage 53, Carl Junction 45

The Lady Tigers starting guard trio of Kianna Yates, Maggie Boyd and Lauren Choate all scored in double digits against Carl Junction in the semifinal game of the Bill Hanson Memorial Tournament in Pittsburg, Kan, to lead the Tigers to a 53-45 win and a chance to claim the tournament title Saturday.

“What an amazing team win tonight,” said Carthage Head Coach Scott Moore. “It’s been a long time since Carthage girls have beaten Carl Junction and we are so proud of the girls for executing the game plan tonight.”

Yates paced the Tigers with 19 points followed by Boyd with 16 points. Choate added 12 points for the Tigers. Sophie Shannon had 3 points, Landry Cochran finished with 2 points and Presley Probert added a free throw.

Carthage 26, Kickapoo 47
After a hard fought semifinal matchup against Carl Junction, the Lady Tigers couldn’t get much going against Kickapoo, one of the top teams in the state, in the Bill Hanson Tournament Championship Saturday.

“We used a lot of energy and emotion to beat Carl Junction yesterday, so our shots fell short today and Kickapoo capitalized on that in transition,” said Coach Moore.

“The score may not reflect it, but I’m pretty proud of how we played today. We battled one of the top teams in the state and kept them below their season scoring average.”

Kickapoo was able to contain Carthage’s lead scorer Yates and hold her to 7 points for the contest. Maggie Boyd added 5 points for the Tigers. Probert finished with 4 points while Choate and Cochran added 3 points apiece. Shannon had 2 points and Zye Clark and Ashlyn Brust had 1 point each.

“We wanted to bring home the championship trophy today. So the girls are a little disappointed,” added Moore. “However, they should be proud of themselves for the work they did to put us in position to compete in the championship game.”

The Lady Tigers are 8-10 on the season and travel to Seneca Thursday.
