CHS Wrestling honors Seniors in busy week leading up to COC Tournament

Heading into the season’s home stretch, Carthage Tiger Wrestling competed in the Platte County Tournament, celebrated Senior Night versus Webb City and traveled to Springfield Central High School for a double dual versus Central and Waynesville.  As many schools are dealing with the grind of illness and fatigue at this point in the season, the Tigers’ varsity lineup has remained relatively healthy.  Some of this longevity can be attributed to the break the team took a couple of weekends ago to rest when sickness surged after the holidays.  Add in a major win over long-time rivals, the Neosho Wildcats, Senior Night and a consistent lineup and you’ve got a recipe for a team that is firing on all cylinders approaching District competition in a couple of weeks.

Head Coach Kenny Brown is pleased to see the progress his guys have made from the beginning of the season, noting that adapting and changing up practices is a necessity.

“We’re always trying to improve.  And our guys on this team thrive on learning and getting better,” Brown said.  “Continuity is so important.  My guys take it personally when they lose and feel like they are letting their team down.  They really understand the importance of their part in the team dynamic and try and make each other better.”

So what is the formula for a successful team year after year?  Brown laughs as he explains that there is “no one thing” that helps a team win or lose.  He does, however, attribute a few key touchstones that have helped his team year after year.

“My coaching staff is a major part of our team’s success.  They are not only successful in their own rite, but they bring such a variety of skills to the table.  Their personalities are all so different that it’s easy for the kids to find someone they can relate to.”  Coach Brown also believes in the importance of hard work and family support.  “To be honest, one of the most important ideas that a kid can take away from his time with Carthage Wrestling is that what he does off the mat holds more value than what he does on the mat.  Once these guys buy into the idea of getting good grades, conducting themselves responsibly, working hard and being a good practice partner, the rest is easy.”

At this point in the season, the pressure is on to be successful and get some critical wins against district opponents.  The Platte County Tournament was a good test for Carthage, as it was the last regular tournament before COC.  Sophomore Dylan Huntley was the only Tiger to take home a championship, with senior Eli Sneed placing second and juniors Grey Petticrew and Davion King taking third. With only a partial lineup, Coach Brown was very pleased with the team’s ability to place third in the tournament, considering the level of competition.

Heading into this week’s duals on Tuesday and Thursday, the team was back at full strength for Senior Night versus Webb City.  Seniors Byron Lopez, Walter Reyes-Mojica, Christian Brown, Eli Sneed, Cody Reeves, Braxdon Tate, Grant Lasley, Brett Rockers and Kanen Vogt were recognized, along with their parents, and the team put up a solid win against the Cardinals.  “Senior Night is always bittersweet.  You want nothing but success for these guys, but I’m always sad to see them go.  They are a great group of kids and I hope to see them back on the mat again helping future generations the way they were helped,” Coach Brown said.  “With the wins over Webb, Central and Waynesville, we got some good practice for what is to come in the COC Tournament and Districts.  Every victory counts,” said Brown.
