CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Wrestling Tigers hosted their annual holiday tournament over Christmas break, bringing in other Class 4 talent from across the state. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the day ended with some tough competition and an 0-4 dual record for the team, with losses to Liberty North, Ray-Pec, Nixa and Grain Valley, who is ranked number 10 in the state for Class 4.
In the dual versus Liberty North, freshman Caden Groom (113 lbs.), sophomores Grady Huntley and Latrell Abbasi, and junior David Recinos all recorded key wins for the Tigers, with a decision, two pins and a major decision, respectively. The heart of Liberty North’s lineup, however, proved to be too strong, as they pinned their way through the 144 lb. weight class to 175 lbs.
Ray-Pec dropped their first match to Carthage during the second dual, when Caden Groom came up big with the pin at 113 lbs. Wyatt Hole loss a close decision to Kamdon VonHolten at 120 lbs., but Emerson Ixcol roared back with another pin at 126 lbs. Grady Huntley (132 lbs.) continued the Tigers’ wins with another pin, and Bradyn Tate recorded the decision at 138 lbs. Ray-Pec flexed their muscles, though, with 6 pins to answer at weights 144 – 190 lbs. David Recinos and Tanner Putt recorded two more falls for the Tigers, but with an open at 285 lbs., the Panthers proved too much for a Tiger victory.
Emerson Ixcol (126 lbs.) recorded the first win for the Tigers versus Grain Valley, in what would be a back and forth dual at the beginning. Following a fall by Bradyn Tate at 138 lbs., Grain Valley recorded wins at the next five weights, which included four pins. Carthage rallied with forfeits by Grain Valley at 190 and 285 lbs., and wins by David Recinos in Sudden Victory at 215 lbs. and Tanner Putt at 106 lbs., but a loss at 113 lbs. sealed the victory for Grain Valley.
The last dual of the day concluded with Nixa’s 49-25 win over the Tigers. Proving to be the toughest competition of the day, Carthage recorded wins by Grady Huntley at 132 lbs. (Fall), David Recinos at 215 lbs. (Major Decision), Tanner Putt at 106 lbs. (Fall), Caden Groom at 113 lbs. (Decision 3-0) and Wyatt Hole at 120 lbs. (forfeit). Nixa’s consistency bested the Tigers, however, with key wins from 138-190 lbs., with three of those losses from forfeits.
