OZARK, Mo. — The Carthage Wrestling team qualified four wrestlers to this year’s Class Four State Tournament in Columbia, MO on February 24th and 25th. Seniors Grey Petticrew at 150 lbs. and Davion King at 165 lbs. lead the group that includes junior Bradyn Tate at 132 lbs. and first-time state qualifier, sophomore Tanner Putt at 106 lbs. The team travels to Mid-Missouri this Thursday for the two-day competition that begins Friday at 6pm.
This year’s district competition at Ozark proved to every bit as tough as the brackets indicated, with Ozark High School the clear front runner throughout the weekend. For Carthage, Putt was the first to qualify at 106 lbs. by finishing 2nd overall, with a close overtime loss in the finals to Raymore-Peculiar’s Kanden Von Holton. Petticrew and King followed with 2nd place finishes, as well. Petticrew pinned his way through the tournament, but lost by fall to Ozark’s state champion Braxdon Strick. King won by fall his first two matches and decisioned Lee’s Summit’s Jackson Jones in overtime to make it to the finals. King faced Eli Zar of Neosho, and ultimately lost the decision to become this year’s district runner-up.
Seniors Kip Castor (144 lbs.), Trey Nye (157 lbs.) and Gabe Lambeth (175 lbs.) finished their seasons with records of 21-12, 27-16 and 25-14 respectively. Carthage has wrestlers Alberto Sales (113 lbs.), Grady Huntley (120 lbs.), Israel Perez (126 lbs.), Alexander Salas-Marquez (215 lbs.) and David Recinos (Heavyweight) returning to join Putt and Tate in next year’s lineup.
