This week, the Senate third read and passed several pieces of legislation. Click the links below to follow the progress of all of my sponsored legislation:
- Senate Bill 3 modifies provisions relating to the promotion of business development.
- Senate Bill 25 authorizes an income tax deduction for certain federal grant money.
- Senate Bill 100 creates and modifies provisions relating to gold and silver.
- Senate Bill 109 modifies provisions relating to mining.
- Senate Bill 111 modifies provisions relating to the administration of state employees.
- Senate Bill 116 modifies provisions relating to the disposition of the dead.
- Senate Joint Resolution 3 modifies provisions relating to taxation.
Several more of my bills were referred to committee this week, and we are hoping for hearings on them soon. Once a bill is referred to committee, it is up to the chairman of that committee to schedule a hearing for the bill. If the chairman refuses to hear the bill, it is dead on arrival. Once a bill is heard in committee, the chairman can bring it up for executive session where senators on that committee can vote on the legislation. Often, bills are changed between when they are presented and voted on in committee. These changes are incorporated in a Senate Committee Substitute (SCS), which is what the committee will end up voting on. After getting voted out of committee, legislation must be called out of committee by the president pro tem. After this, the majority floor leader has the authority to bring the bill up on the Senate floor.

Heartland Canines for Veterans
I was honored to be part of the Tactical Paws program recognizing veteran Larry Mills and his service dog, Archie, for successfully completing the K-9 training program at Heartland Canines for Veterans. I had the privilege of speaking for a few minutes and presenting them with a folded State of Missouri flag that had flown over our state Capitol. Ted Donaldson, development director at Heartland Canines for Veterans, deserves a lot of credit for this necessary work. Thank you to South Joplin VFW Post 5293 and Compass Quest Veterans Advocacy for sponsoring this event and to Cup O Joe, a local veteran-owned coffee shop, for hosting.
