Thomas Wayne “Tom” Bewick, 79, Carthage, Missouri, passed away Thursday evening, July 14, 2022, at St. Luke’s Nursing Center, Carthage.
Tom was born March 12, 1943, in Annapolis, Maryland, the son of James Voigt Bewick and Margaret (Sears) Bewick. He was a 1961 graduate of ‘Iolani School in Honolulu, Hawaii. He then went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri, and his master’s degree and specialist degree in education from Southwest Missouri State University. Tom married the love of his life, Susan Berry on August 6, 1966, in Fulton, Missouri. He worked as an elementary school principal for Eugene Field School and Pleasant Valley in Carthage until his retirement, then later returning and working at several other schools. Tom was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, and worked in his retirement as a recruiter for the Naval Academy. Tom was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Carthage, the Carthage Rotary Club, and the Missouri State Teachers Association. He also spent time as a city councilman and a Boy Scout leader. Tom was a people person and enjoyed meeting and talking with everyone he could, but most of all, he loved his family.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Susan Bewick; two daughters, Elisa White (Brad), Carthage, and Rebecca Bewick, Portland, Oregon; a son, Bryan Bewick, Shalimar, Florida; six grandchildren, Audrey Willingham (Matthew), Alex White (Brooklyn), Andrew White, Zachary Bewick, Cooper Bewick, Zoey Bewick; a great-grandchild, Charlotte Willingham; a brother, James Bewick (Penny), Portland, Oregon; and many extended family and friends.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2022, at Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage. Inurnment will take place at the Grace Church Columbarium. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
