Ruth Carolyn Overton, 91, Carthage, Missouri, a beacon of love, kindness, and intelligence, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at her home with family by her side. She was born on July 23, 1933, in Southwest City, Missouri, the daughter of the late James and Myrtle Williams. Ruth’s life was a testament to her enduring commitment to her family, her work, and the many organizations she served with passion.
Ruth’s journey began as a proud graduate of Carthage High School in 1951. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to further her education at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Oklahoma. It was there that Ruth’s sharp mind and attention to detail flourished, skills that would serve her well throughout her life. She married Hugh Overton on November 27, 1952, in Carthage, Missouri. Together they shared a life filled with love and everlasting memories.
Her career was marked by dedication and expertise, having worked as an accountant for SWEST Inc. in Dallas, Texas, for 18 years. Ruth’s entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly when she and her beloved husband, Hugh, took on the venture of owning and operating Southwest Clock Supply for 41 years. As Vice President and Treasurer, Ruth’s acumen was an integral part of the business’s success. Beyond her professional achievements, Ruth’s involvement in various associations highlighted her commitment to community and service. She was a past president and member of Soroptimist International, an organization devoted to improving the lives of women and girls. Ruth also held membership in the Order of the Eastern Star, further demonstrating her dedication to fellowship and charity. Ruth’s leadership abilities were further recognized when she served as president for two terms for the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. Her contributions to the field were not only administrative but also intellectual, as she authored numerous articles for their publication.
Ruth is survived by her husband of almost 72 years, Hugh Overton; her sister, Barbara Dumphy, St. Louis, Missouri; her nieces, Sherry Jennings, Decatur, Georgia, Karen Dumphy, St. Louis, Missouri, and Sheila Williams, Lake City, South Carolina; her nephews, Justin Overton (Holly), Miller, Missouri, Mark Overton (Stephanie), Ozark, Missouri, and Mark Williams, Nashville, Tennessee; and many extended family and friends.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 am, Friday, September 20, 2024, at Park Cemetery, Carthage. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Carthage Masonic Lodge in care of Knell Mortuary.
