Mary E. Lyon, 66, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin. Mary was born March 14, 1952 in Fort Scott, Kansas to Harlan E. and Marguerite “Lovell” Lyon.
Mary received her degree in education at MSSU. She taught in many schools throughout her long career in Southwest Missouri. She retired from her position at Jefferson Elementary in Joplin. Mary studied vocal music all her life. She studied with a variety of teachers including Margaret Thunaman at Pitt State University and her mother, Marguerite. She continued her love of music by participating in the hand-bell choir and leading the children’s choir the United Methodist Church. But her greatest joy was spending time with her daughter and grandchildren watching Disney movies, playing and reading stories.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Lucy Forcum and husband Eric Peterson of Carthage; one brother, Joseph E. Lyon and wife Mariann; one sister, Ruth “Elaine” Lenz and husband Bill; and two grandchildren, Lily and Lexy; nieces and nephews, Connor and Hadley Lyon, Ron and Laura (Lenz) Radtke and their daughter Sydney, Christian Lenz and his wife Miranda and their daughter Camden, Melissa Forcum and her children Lorelai and Xander, Sara Fortin and her son Griffin.
Mary was preceded in death by her father, Harlan E. Lyon.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church in Carthage.
