Betsy Mae Thornton, 84, Carthage, Missouri, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2025, at her home. She was born on October 28, 1940, in Fredonia, Kansas, the daughter of the late Ralph Key and Aline (Scannell) Key. Betsy was one of 13 children, all of their names starting with the letter “B”. Her life was a tapestry of joyous moments and enduring relationships, woven with the threads of her warm personality and generous spirit.

Betsy’s journey began in the heart of the Midwest, where her infectious laughter and thoughtful nature quickly became the cornerstone of her identity. Her life was marked by her unwavering commitment to her family, whom she cherished above all else. Betsy married Delwin K. Cotton, Sr. in 1957, and to this union, they had five children; they later divorced. She then married Roy Thornton on December 8, 1972, in Miami, Oklahoma; he preceded her in death in 2005.

Survivors include her children, Karla Webb (Mike), Karen Cronk (Larry), Del “Bub” Cotton, Jr. (Joanna), and Teresa Gault (John); thirteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; her sisters, Becky Kinsgbury and Bonnie Barron (Richard); her longtime friend, Sonnie Aikins, whose friendship was a source of comfort and joy throughout the years; her beloved dogs, Mitzy and Ginger; and many extended family and friends. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Keith Allen Cotton; a granddaughter, Marla Combs; and ten siblings.

Betsy’s entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as the proud owner and operator of the Longhorn Bar in Webb City, Missouri, for 20 years. Her establishment was more than just a business; it was a gathering place where friendships were forged. Her interests were as varied as they were heartfelt. Betsy had a passion for singing, which brought joy to many and showcased her vivacious personality. Her love for her dogs was unparalleled, and the time spent with them was precious and cherished. However, it was her love for her family that truly defined her. Betsy’s presence at family gatherings was the highlight of every celebration, and her absence will be profoundly felt.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm, Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. The burial will follow at Weaver Cemetery, Oronogo. The family will receive friends from 1 pm until service time at the funeral home. Online condolences may be expressed through www.knellmortuary.com.
