A gift from a child’s heart

A Domino’s Pizza delivery to a business, or even government office, isn’t that unusual, but the delivery of four pizzas to the Carthage Police Department on Friday evening was special.

Carthage Police Chief Greg Dagnan said the officers on the evening shift who got to enjoy the pizza were touched by the gesture from one of Carthage’s younger residents.

“I was still there last night when I got everything wrapped up,” Dagnan said. “I went up and the guys were eating the pizza, and the topic of the conversation was, can you believe that a 9-year-old kid spent his money and called and got this delivered.”

The boy’s mom told Carthagenewsonline.com he didn’t want to be identified, but he sent a hand-written note to the officers along with the pizza.

“Thank you for keeping us safe,” the note read. “I know you guys are the good guys. Please enjoy this pizza from Domino’s from us. We know it is safe because of you guys.”

The boy’s mom said he has a huge heart, and he had wanted to cook something for the officers, but he decided to send pizza to make sure he followed social distancing.

She said the boy has heard some of the news in the nation regarding the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week, and he had been struggling with the fact that the bad man in the case was a police officer.

The mom said she and her son had talked about how most police were the good ones, and the good ones were protecting them in Carthage.

Chief Dagnan said residents of Carthage have kept up a steady stream of donations to local emergency workers, and it has helped maintain morale during the Covid pandemic and during this week of turmoil in the nation.

“Since this Covid thing started, it has been a constant supply of donations, people dropping stuff by, people buying meals for us, whatever,” Dagnan said. “We’ve been keeping a list and we sat down to write some thank you notes, and I thought I would be signing thank you notes forever, there was a huge stack of thank you notes. The citizens have been great to us, we’ve been treated very well during this thing.”

He said Friday night’s gift definitely touched some hearts.

“He may not like me saying this because he’s a young boy, but this is definitely the cutest gift that we’ve gotten,” Dagnan said. “The letter is obviously heartfelt, he obviously means it, and my guess would be he probably spent his own money for this pizza, so all that made it really special.

“I think most 9-year-old boys, if they have money, they’re thinking about what they’re going to buy with it, what skateboard or video game they’re going to buy and the fact that he would spend that money on us is very much appreciated.”
