Tiger Wrestlers focused on continuous improvements

It has been a busy few weeks for the Carthage Wrestling team.  Just before Christmas, the Tigers hit the mat at the Harrisonville Holiday Tournament, where they took 5th place with a squad of only eight.  Coach Kenny Brown was pleased with the team’s effort against their competition.

“It’s easy to blame losses on open weights, injuries and eligibility, but I would rather focus on what my guys are doing well.  Sometimes you have a great tournament team, and sometimes you have a great dual team.  As a whole, our team is continuing to have success, and we’ll continue to push harder until we’re where we want to be.  Peaking before districts is always our endgame.”

That hard work showcased itself during the Carthage Duals, which the team hosted over Christmas break.  Made up of five Class Four teams, (Carthage, Columbia Hickman, Lee’s Summit, Nixa, and Ray-Pec) the Tiger grapplers got a good preview of their district and state competition.

“Open weight classes aside, I was very pleased with the team’s performance.  Not only did our guys have some great matches, but they learned that they can go with those other class four kids.  Confidence and mat presence usually develop with success and hard work, but it’s not something I can teach them.  Until we have some continuity in our lineup, I am relying on our veterans to continue to encourage and push our new guys,” Coach Brown stated.

The team was tested Tuesday at Ozark in a tough road loss to another Class Four powerhouse.

“Credit to Ozark for having a solid team up and down the line.  Even our three wins that night were hard fought.  The biggest takeaway from that dual is that our team needs to keep from being bullied on the mat.  Anytime another team forces us off our game plan for the match, it is much easier for them to be successful.  It’s not so much about working harder but working smarter and remembering what was taught in practice.  We will definitely be working on our level of intensity this week to get ready for Excelsior and Seneca,” Brown said.
