Friday night marked the second day of competition at this year’s MSHSAA Wrestling Championships.  Of the eight wrestlers that qualified for the Carthage Tigers, three remained in the hunt following quarterfinal and semifinal matches: Senior Dalen Moore, and juniors Brener Ocana and Kale Schrader.  Pinning his way through the first round and quarterfinals, Schrader (220) finally met his match in semifinalist Matt Gentry from Eureka with a barn burner tiebreaker match.  The 2-1 victory kept Schrader’s undefeated record intact, and he will represent the Tigers in this year’s state championship finals match at 220 lbs.  His opponent, Park Hill junior Austin Sharp boasts a 17-2 record with wins over four ranked wrestlers on his side of the state bracket this weekend.

Senior Dalen Moore (126) continued his march to the podium as a three-time state placer with a win over Eureka’s Matt Lester in Friday’s quarterfinal match.  The semifinal match, however, marked the end of Moore’s quest for a state championship when he was beaten by Park Hill’s Ethen Miller, 19-3.  Proving to be his toughest match all year, Moore’s loss by technical fall came from the number three ranked wrestler in his weight class.  Moore’s consolation semifinal round on Saturday proved to be difficult, as well, with a loss to Liberty freshman, Kyle Dutton, 8-6. With a fifth place win over Teddy Hickey of Fort Zumwalt North, though, Dalen Moore sealed his place in Carthage and Missouri wrestling history as a four-time state medalist and the number two most winning wrestler in the Carthage program.

Junior Brener Ocana (285) rounded up the lineup for the Tiger Wrestling Team with a quarterfinal pin over Marquette’s Isiah Bresseaux.  The quarterfinals, consolation semifinals and fith place matches proved too tough to overcome, however, with losses by fall in each, respectively.  Ocana ends the year with a sixth place finish, All-State and Academic All-State honors.
