An 81-year-old Carthage woman has died after a single-vehicle crash occurred on New Year’s Eve, just before 8 p.m.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Barbara J. Pitcock, a passenger in a 2013 Nissan Maxima, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, 74-year-old Forrest A. Smith, also from Carthage, was taken to Freeman West Hospital with serious injuries.
The crash occurred on MO 171 near the I-49 interchange. According to the report the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway striking a traffic control post, then rotated and flipped landing on its roof coming to rest in the roadway. Both occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time.

This was the 114th fatality in 2020 for Troop D.
