William David (Bill) Haughawout, 98, died of natural causes on July 20, 2020, at Oak Pointe of Carthage. He was born on May 3, 1922, and was the son of Euclid M. (Uke) Haughawout and Mary Anning Haughawout. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1940 and attended the former Joplin Junior College and University of Missouri at Columbia, MO. He served with the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a self-employed businessman and retired from Uke’s Tire and Sporting Goods in 1989. He married Bonnie Sue Clark on December 21, 1947; she preceded him in death. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.
Bill was past President of Carthage Rotary Club, Carthage Historic Preservation, and the Carthage Park Board and was past Vice President of the Carthage Chamber of Commerce. He was a former member of the Carthage YMCA Board and a lifetime member of the VFW. In June 2013, he was named Patriot of the Month by the Missouri Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Bill had two honors that were very meaningful to him. In 2015, he was inducted into the Hall of Carthage Heroes for his athletic skeet shooting accomplishments. He was well known throughout the region, state, and nationally for his innumerable skeet championships. In 2017, he had the honor of serving as the Grand Marshall in the 51st annual Carthage Maple Leaf parade.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan Anning Clark and Mary Bumpus, both of St. Louis; two granddaughters, Emily Bumpus of Chicago, IL and Kaitlin Bumpus of St. Louis; one sister Jeannene Butts and husband Fred of Carthage. A sister, Margaret Wynne of Lakewood, CO, and a brother, Troy of Carthage, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 31, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at the Grace Episcopal Church, conducted by Father Steven Wilson. The visitation will follow in the church parish hall. Inurnment will be in Park Cemetery in the Garden of the Last Supper with full military honors. Memorial gifts are suggested to Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage, in care of Knell Mortuary.
