Marion Luther “Smitty” Smith, 88, passed away Monday, June 1, 2020, at Landmark Hospital in Joplin.
Marion was born August 22, 1931, in Pleasant Grove, AR to Marion Horance and Elsie Melvina “Cross” Smith. Marion was a Carthage resident since 1962 and served in the United States Air Force as a member of the Air Police during the Korean War. After leaving the Air Force, he worked as a forklift operator at Flemming Foods in Joplin. Once Marion retired, he and his wife worked at Long John Silvers in Carthage. He attended the Bible Baptist Church in Carthage. Marion was fond of hunting and enjoyed viewing nature in the great outdoors.
Marion was united in marriage to Lula Bell McCann on March 3, 1962, in Benton, IL; she preceded him in death on May 16, 2020.
Marion is survived by three sons, Daniel Smith (Deon) of Fidelity, MO, Robert Smith (Melissa) of Billings, MO and Charles Smith (Kayleen) of Neosho, MO; one daughter, Linda Smith of Joplin; one sister, Thelma M. Pyles of Carthage; one brother, Robert Franklin Smith of Mt. View, AR; 13 grandchildren, Wendell, James, Daniel, Matthew, Michelle, Emily, Jacob, Timothy, Christopher, Megan, Marshall, Monika and Myles, along with eight great-grandchildren.
Marion is preceded in death by two brothers, Jay L. Smith and Grady Calvin Smith; two sisters, Patricia Ann Goodman and Frances Marie Smith.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, June 5, 2020, at Ulmer Funeral Home. Services will immediately follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Jasper School Cemetery east of Carthage (County Road 80 and Elm Road).
