JOPLIN – The Missouri Southern women’s soccer team erased a 3-0 deficit to tie it up (3-3) with ten minutes to go in regulation, but the Newman University Jets scored a late goal in the final two minutes to escape with a 4-3 victory inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Lions (2-10-0, 1-4-0 MIAA) outshot the Jets 16-11 for the match with six of them on goal.
Freshman Brianna Marquez began the charge in the 73rd minute of the second period on an assist from senior defender Brianna Smith. Sophomore forward Courtney Marten scored the second goal on a header past the goalkeeper, followed by Sarah Tatum with a shot from 25 yards out to complete the comeback with ten minutes to play.
Newman (6-3-3, 2-2-1 MIAA) headed into the half with a 2-0 lead and added a third in the 70th minute of the second period. Then as time was winding down, the Jets scored the game winner with chaos throughout the box after a foul committed by the Lions.
Missouri Southern travels to play a pair of 1:00 pm matches with Nebraska-Kearney next Friday and then Fort Hays State on Sunday.
