CARTHAGE, Mo. — Carthage R-9 School District is proud to announce that 3rd Grade Dual Language Teacher Yessenia Viera has been recognized as a recipient of the 2026 Amplify Science of Reading STAR Awards, earning the prestigious Language Luminary Award.
The Amplify Science of Reading STAR Awards honor educators, schools, and districts that have transformed literacy instruction through the implementation of Science of Reading principles. Award recipients are recognized for their commitment to helping students develop the foundational literacy skills needed for lifelong success.
Viera, who teaches in Carthage R-9’s Dual Language Program, was selected for her dedication to supporting multilingual learners and fostering bilingualism and biliteracy in her classroom. With 13 years of experience in education, she draws upon her own experiences growing up bilingual to connect with students and help them embrace their language and cultural identities.
“It’s important to create a classroom environment in which students feel proud of who they are and where their language and cultures are seen as strengths,” said Viera. “When students feel valued, they are more confident and more willing to take risks in their learning.”
Using the Amplify Caminos curriculum, Viera provides literacy instruction grounded in the Science of Reading while intentionally integrating reading, writing, speaking, and vocabulary development. Her classroom emphasizes high expectations, student engagement, and creating a learning environment where every child feels seen, valued, and empowered.
“Yessenia’s passion for literacy and her commitment to helping students become proficient in multiple languages make her an incredible asset to our district,” said Carthage Superintendent Dr. Luke Boyer. “She not only teaches students how to read and write, but also helps them develop confidence in their abilities. This recognition is a reflection of the impact she makes every day.”
The Language Luminary Award recognizes educators who demonstrate exceptional success in developing the skills and strengths of multilingual and English learners. Viera’s work has helped create opportunities for students to become confident readers while celebrating the diverse languages and cultures they bring to the classroom.
Carthage R-9 School District congratulates Yessenia Viera on this outstanding achievement and thanks her for the lasting impact she continues to make on students, families, and the entire Carthage community.
