CARTHAGE, Mo. — After dropping back-to-back games at home, the Carthage Tigers got back on the W train with a 7-0 win over Hollister Friday at Carl Lewton Stadium.
Nolan Brown (2-1, 0.57 ERA) earned the win for Carthage scattering five hits and zero runs in the complete game shutout. He struck out nine and walked one. The defense behind Brown turned two double plays and didn’t commit a single error.
“Going into the game we have talked about how important it is to throw strikes, and I thought that Nolan did a great job commanding the zone,” Carthage Head Coach Kevin Burgi said. “He did a very good job commanding his fastball, and throwing his changeup when he needed. He was really good today.”
Bradyn Tate opened the scoring for the Tigers in the second inning when he doubled to deep left scoring Gabe Madsen and Brady Carlton.
Carthage scored again in the fourth on a double from Ethan Stark that scored Taylor Stevens-Diggs. Austin Mitchell ran for Stark then stole third and a bad throw sailed over the third baseman’s head. Mitchell advanced to home on the error to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead.
Carthage added two more runs in the fifth. The first came when Zach Hoenshell hit a pop up that found the outfield grass, scoring Blayne Lilienkamp. Stevens-Diggs grounded out to bring home Zane Browning.
“I thought we did a good job scoring runs off a good pitcher,” Burgi said. “Stark and Zach had big hits that helped add to our lead.”
In the sixth, Carthage tacked on another run on a Lilienkamp single to center that scored Landon Bland.
Carthage (7-4) next faces Bolivar Monday at home. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
